The Glen Mhor Programme (Baysville)

Glen Mhor is a traditional, overnight camping programme!

facepaint_sm

Glen Mhor has an amazing number of activities to try – and you might find a hidden talent for climbing wall, archery, kayaking, or music and drama!  You will get a chance to do all of the camp activities each week, and make new friends within your cabin group.

Glen Mhor has TLC (Bible study) each morning, a camp-wide game every night, and lots of special traditions every week.  Glen Mhor is an exciting, creative and friendly place – where costumes, canoes and funny characters often make appearances at mealtime announcements!.  We can’t wait to see you this summer!

Have you been to Glen Mhor in the past?  What are your favourite memories?  Let us know in the comments!

2010 marks 80 years of camping in our Synod!

Time to Celebrate

We are SO excited to celebrate this milestone, and to have our camp families, friends, campers and alumni share with us!

A short list of events coming in 2010…more to come soon, so stay tuned!

  • 80th Anniversary Alumni Weekend – September 10th-12th  2010
  • 80th Anniversary Gala – Saturday October 23rd 2010

Cairn Report to Synod

End of Another Great Summer

Here are my 5 favourite moments from the summer of 2009:1. Listening to Tauru and Abrigo perform songs for us each Friday night at Cairn Capades.

2. Iona Boys Week.  What an absolute blast!

3. The opening campfire during Family Camp.  I had the chance to be a character in this campfire, and I’ve never had so much fun pretending to be a hip-hop star!

4. Seeing Wall-E and Eva come to visit us at camp!  Our Juniors got to meet (and help save) both robots.  The robots even made an appearance at free swim…I hope they were waterproof!

5. Listening to Topaz teach and lead during Teen Week.  From “retro moments” to our morning stories, it was a great way for the summer to end.

It was a summer full of great moments.  What were your favourite moments?  Tell us on Facebook, tell us on the camp website (ilovecamp.org), tell us in person or on the phone or by e-mail.  We would LOVE to hear about your highlights!

As another summer closes, and we look ahead to our 80th Anniversary in 2010, let’s take a moment to reflect and celebrate what we accomplished in 2009.

Thanks for the summer, friends.

Sr. High Retreat

Enjoying Sr. HighThis past weekend we had Youth Groups join us from 5 different Churches across our Synod!  It was a great time of fellowship, networking and play for the young people, and a chance to worship on Sunday morning as a diverse crowd.

Thanks to the leaders and teens who came to camp for the weekend.  We had a great time with you, and especially enjoyed all the performances and antics at our Cairn Capades talent night!

CAIRN surpasses OCA Standards

CAIRN involved in the Ontario Camps Association.

StandardsSince the early 1930’s, our Synod camping ministry has been part of the Ontario Camps Association.  In addition to the support we receive, we must also be compliant with their many strict standards of operation. The OCA standards are extremely high and take into consideration every aspect of a healthy and safe camp experience for both campers and staff.  Every 4 years, we are accredited by a standard’s visitor.  This year, Rick Howard of Camp Tamarack will do our inspection the 3rd week of August.  Each and every year, regardless of a standards visit, we use the standards manual as a checklist to ensure that all areas of camp are following the guidelines set out by the OCA.  At Cairn, safety is very important to us and we do all that we can to ensure a great camp experience for all!

Buildings on the Glen Mhor Site at Cairn

Dining Hall/ Main Lodge

Our lodge is the central meeting area of the Outdoor Centre. Most of the action will take place at centre camp, around the Lodge. The building also houses the offices of our Directors and all senior staff members, along with staff laundry facilities.  All meals are eaten in our Dining Hall, along with evening campfires during the spring (due to insects in the spring). It is our most popular building due to its picturesque view of Echo Lake, and its appealing stone fireplace.

Sleeping Accommodations – Cabins at the Outdoor Centre

While at camp, participants will sleep in one of our 12 cabins on our site.  Our Cabins are located on both sides of our site -  boys side and girls side! Each cabin can accommodate up to 10 people comfortably on bunk beds with ample storage.  Accompanying teachers and parent supervisors may reside in any one of these cabins located within close proximity to the group memberʼs cabins or in the camper cabins with their group. All cabins are within a 5 minute walk to the Lodge complex (Dining Hall and Washrooms) and are a short walk to the waterfront and other areas on site.

Washroom Facilities

There is a main washroom complex for both males and females which include shower facilities located at our main lodge.  The complex is located in the main lodge building not far from any cabin. There are also Kyboʼs (outhouses) provided in close proximity to all cabins.

Health Centre
We have a fully equipped Health Centre located directly beside our main lodge.  It is available for all first aid needs. In addition to the Health Centre, all programme areas have access to fully stocked first aid kits, and each staff member carries a first aid with them on hand at all time. A local doctor  by the name of Dr. Rae and the Huntsville Hospital (approximately a 25 minute drive from camp) are on call and available in case of a more serious incident or injury.

Should our participants require medication, please note that student meds can be safely stored at The Glen Mhor Site in either the Health Centre or in our locked medication bin. Please note that it is not the responsibility of the Glen Mhor Staff to dispense medication.

Fox Den

The Fox Den is our main craft facility where all of our campers creative ideas come alive! The Fox Den is used both in our spring and summer programming.

Thicket

Cairn’s administration and main office is located within the Thicket. It is also the where the Directors of Cairn at Baysville live for the season.

Haven Village

The Haven Village is our Staff Accommodation area. It houses one main building and three smaller bunkies, plus our staff washhouse.
