Cairn is thrilled to announce that Brad “Peche” Cross has joined the Synod Camp Board! Peche brings a wealth of experience as a camper and staff member at Glen Mhor Camp, a member of the Cairn Alumni committee, a volunteer coordinator for Cairn, a Consultant with Deloitte and Touche and – most of all – as a Father.
Brad joins a Board that is filled with capable, dedicated members who prayerfully and passionately serve camping and the Synod. We’re so lucky to have them!
OCA Accreditation
Cairn has been an Accredited member of the Ontario Camps Association (OCA) for a long, long time. This past summer we were Re-Accredited – a process that happens every 3-4 years.
What does it mean to be Accredited by the OCA? Basically, it means that our programmes and facilities are safe and follow the best-practices used in the camping industry. In many cases Cairn actually exceeds the proscribed standard!
For the complete guide to OCA Standards, click here.
Special thanks to Rick Howard, Director at Camp Tamarack, who did our inspection visit this year!
Kids Don’t Think They Have a Future
Tomorrow, I’m headed to Magog, Quebec to speak at the Quebec Camping Association’s annual conference. My presentation is entitled: Kids Don’t Think They Have a Future. The premise is that camp is the perfect solution for modern children, since it teaches them to delay gratification, to make lasting friendships and to participate in traditions that give them a sense of history.
This morning, the Toronto Star published an article that speaks perfectly to my presentation – I’m even talking about the Marshmallow Test as a part of my talk. I thought the Cairn community might appreciate a look at the more *abstract* side of Camp Directing.
Job Posting

Please find the Job Posting below. Feel free to forward this to any qualified candidates. The deadline for applications is November 20th, but Cairn is committed to finding the right person for the job.

On Monday, October 19th, Cairn makes its annual report to Synod. We have been invited to lead worship for this gathering of Commissioners from Churches across the Synod, and we are so pleased to be able to share the success stories of Camp! Staff – if you can join us for worship that day, we would love to have you!
End of Another Great Summer

2. Iona Boys Week. What an absolute blast!
3. The opening campfire during Family Camp. I had the chance to be a character in this campfire, and I’ve never had so much fun pretending to be a hip-hop star!
4. Seeing Wall-E and Eva come to visit us at camp! Our Juniors got to meet (and help save) both robots. The robots even made an appearance at free swim…I hope they were waterproof!
5. Listening to Topaz teach and lead during Teen Week. From “retro moments” to our morning stories, it was a great way for the summer to end.
It was a summer full of great moments. What were your favourite moments? Tell us on Facebook, tell us on the camp website (ilovecamp.org), tell us in person or on the phone or by e-mail. We would LOVE to hear about your highlights!
As another summer closes, and we look ahead to our 80th Anniversary in 2010, let’s take a moment to reflect and celebrate what we accomplished in 2009.
Thanks for the summer, friends.

This past weekend we had Youth Groups join us from 5 different Churches across our Synod! It was a great time of fellowship, networking and play for the young people, and a chance to worship on Sunday morning as a diverse crowd.
Thanks to the leaders and teens who came to camp for the weekend. We had a great time with you, and especially enjoyed all the performances and antics at our Cairn Capades talent night!
Photos of The Link Road
As promised, here are photos of the completed Link Road. We’re super happy with the way it all came together. Logs and culverts to allow water to flow underneath, gravel for the road surface, and straw to act as a barrier between the logs and the gravel.
What do you think of our new road? Any suggestions for improvement? Tell us in the comments!
